Cruises

One of New Zealand’s most popular tourist activities is taking a cruise on the majestic waters of Milford Sound. It doesn’t matter what the weather holds, every cruise on Milford Sound presents spectacular scenery and unique wildlife encounters that will forever be etched in your memory.

  Red Boats

Sunny days provide sensational views of the snow covered peaks and glacial icefields towering hundreds of meters above.

Cloudy / misty days provide moody vistas with glimpses of peaks and waterfalls, creating a totally enchanting feel.

  Mitre Peak Cruises

Rainy days are something to experience with waterfalls plunging from all directions, some sending spray hundreds of metres out into the fiord.

  Real Journeys

There are a number of cruising companies that operate on the waters of Milford Sound from morning to afternoon, every day of the year. The boats come in all different shapes and sizes, from the small and cozy, to the large and luxurious, and everything in between.

If language is an issue some companies provide interpretive services to help translate the informative natural history commentaries that are all part of the cruising experience.

The cruises vary in length depending on how far out into the fiord you wish to travel. The shortest take just over 1 ½ hours, and the longest 2 ½ hours.

There is also the option of visiting the underwater observatory that allows you to venture below the surface of the fiord to experience the rare marine flora that occurs in these cold, dark waters. Some cruises include this option in there price while others have an additional cost for the visit.
