General Information

  • Seasonal Work: The main tourist season at Milford Sound Lodge runs from September to the end of May. We operate year round but our staff requirements are reduced between May and October.
  • Live-in with Food: All positions at Milford Sound Lodge are “live-in” with accommodation and a staff kitchen that is completely stocked for self-catering. This is provided by the company on site for a nominal fee.
  • Flexible Hours:Rosters vary depending on the position, but are designed to allow time for employees to enjoy the surrounding wilderness and many activities, or to escape from Milford for a burst of city living.
  • Visa Requirements: We will only accept applications from overseas applicants if they already have a valid transferable work visa.

Chef / Cook

We are looking for a team of chefs for our onsite Pio Pio Cafe that offers a la carte breakfast menu and a la carte evening menu as well as a daily fresh and creative lunch cabinet. The right candidates will work alongside the cafe team leader and head chef to ensure we are giving our guests a dining experience true to New Zealand hospitality. Our whole team work together to ensure we continue to uphold our excellent reputation of truly ‘hosting’ our guests.

Our kitchen team is made up of 4 enthusiastic and hard-working cooks/chefs who deliver a range of fresh, homemade and hearty meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Essential

  • Qualifications and/or experience in a kitchen as a cook/chef
  • Passion for the role
  • Health & Safety aware and compliant & excellent hygiene standards
  • Creative flair and eye for detail
  • Teamwork, communication, planning and discussing – we all influence the way our cafe works

Team Leader

For the successful candidate, being close to nature will be a big contributor to what makes this role so appealing. Hosting up to 200 guests each night Milford Sound Lodge offers a variety of accommodation, guest information and booking services as well as food and beverage through our onsite Pio Pio Café, Bar, Restaurant.

The Role

The Team Leader is responsible for coordinating between team members and management to ensure all duties are carried out efficiently and to the highest standards on a daily basis. Reporting any concerns or problems to the relevant department.

The team leader must be able to carry out all tasks at the lodge including the Pio Pio Cafe and take responsibility for an area as and when required.

Duties may include:

  • Assigning duties and setting up the team for the day
  • Ordering / controlling stock levels
  • Helping team members / areas as required
  • Signing off all rooms for check-in, on time
  • Cleaning the chalets, maintaining the laundry room, general day-to-day housekeeping duties
  • Licensed duty manager
  • Hosting, Waiting, Barista, Barwork as required
  • Working the reception front desk, reservations, sales
  • Managing guest complaints
  • Reactionary problem solving
  • Working within the management to report and present any problems and future improvements

Head Chef

We are searching for a Head Chef for Pio Pio, our onsite Café, Restaurant and Bar. The right candidate will have previous experience in this position, excellent customer service and strong leadership skills to lead our dedicated team and ensure our reputation of excellent dining and truly ‘hosting’ our guests is upheld. This role requires a unique skill set due to the remote location and lack of facilities available as well as the high demand from guests as a result of being the sole option within a 120km vicinity.

The team is split into Reception, Housekeeping and the Pio Pio Cafe.

The Head Chef position

  • Manage the kitchen and a team of chefs
  • Duties include but aren’t limited to recruitment, rosters, menus, costing, pricing, ordering and deliveries
  • Run breakfast, lunch and dinner service alongside the team
  • Lead, induct, train, guide and motivate front of house and the kitchen team
  • Manage and quality control all areas of Pio Pio
  • Set and meet budgets and sales targets
  • Onsite First Aider

Skills and experience – the right person will

  • Have the passion and skills to create excellent menus and deliver high quality meals in a remote, fast paced and busy environment
  • Have the skills to think and quickly, remote locations can lead to testing situations, forward planning and resourcefulness are essential skills
  • Have exceptional customer service skills and the experience to back it up

Front of House Professionals

Milford Sound Lodge’s Café, Restaurant and Bar, Pio Pio, is searching for a Front of House Professional to be responsible for providing an outstanding customer service experience, delivering our a la carte breakfast, lunch and evening menus, including freshly made barista coffee, and a selection of fine wines and local beers to up to 200 international guests daily.

Essential skills and experience

  • Have a passion for working with people, exceptional customer service skills and the experience to back it up
  • Be confident on a barista machine, creating high-standard coffees in a fast-paced environment
  • Have the skills and experience to host up to 200 guests throughout the day, be it breakfast, lunch, dinner, coffee, wine, beer, table service, on the bar, back of house
  • Have some experience as a sommalier and/or a good understanding of wine service
  • Fill driver’s licence, duty manager’s license (willing to organise once position is offered)
  • Remote location living experience
