What to do in Milford Sound trout fishing

Fiordland Trout Fishing

Fiordland offers unforgettable trout fishing experiences to enjoy on your way into Milford Sound or from your Milford base.

Fiordland is known for some of the best trout fishing in the world.

Fiordland Trout Fishing

Fiordland combines a winning combination of beautiful wilderness, clear water and bountiful trout with a degree of isolation that makes local trout less wary. Local lakes and river are well stocked with Brown & Rainbow trout.

Whether you’re a seasoned angler, you’ve never fished before or you’re after an unforgettable family day out, adding a Fiordland fly fishing experience to your itinerary is highly recommended. Head out before or after visiting Milford Sound.

Popular Local Spots to Chase Trout

Near Te Anau: Starting with Lake Te Anau, literarally at the end of Te Anau’s main street, there are many fishing opportunities near Te Anau including the Waiau River, which drains the lake. Lake Henry in Ivon Wilson Park is stocked with fish for junior anglers. And experienced anglers might consider Ettrick Burn.

Manapouri: Joined to Lake Te Anau by the Upper Waiau River, and a short drive from Te Anau, Lake Manapouri offers good lake fishing, as do Lake Rakatu and Lake Monowai. And for a little adventure, fishing the Iris Burn from the Kepler Track is well worth the walk.

Around Fiordland:
A local guide will show you the best fishing but the Eglinton & Cleddau rivers are accessable from the Milford Road and the Hollyford River and many rivers and lakes along the Milford Track offer trout fishing.
