Milford Sound Weather
Fiordland and Milford Sound weather can be a little interesting… The area “enjoys” some of the highest rainfall statistics in the world: a big reason that the stunning landscape is covered by temperate rainforest and a key influence on your Milford experience.
If you are going to spend time in Milford Sound you should expect to see some rain. That doesn’t mean you will see rain. During summer average temperatures around 18 degrees celcius are often complemented by cloudless skies. And Fiordland can be at its most picturesque on crisp clear winter days. But be prepared for rain…
A rainy visit to Milford Sound can be more spectacular than a visit on a clear day. Why? Because the sound’s many waterfalls are at their most spectacular during or shortly after rain.
In the winter (May to September) this rain can fall as snow at higher altitudes along and above the Milford Road and close attention to weather forecasts and road information is an essential part of travelling to and from Milford safely.
